because baby makes 4! | Decatur AL newborn photographer
Wanna know one of the most important elements to a successful in-home newborn photo session? I’ll give you a hint:
It’s not your decor.
It’s not a spotless house.
It’s not even what everyone is wearing.
It’s actually the older sibling! Surprised?
Sometimes when a family books a newborn session, certain adult members of the family can feel a little “concerned” about how cooperative the older child is going to be. Let’s face it, the big brother or big sister’s world has been turned upside down with the arrival of a new baby. {Plus the added stress that comes with being a preschooler anyway.}
Will they sit still long enough?
Will they hold the baby?
Will they smile?
It’s all normal to be apprehensive with this age group. But here’s the good news:
YOU. CAN. RELAX.
When I show up to your door for your photo session, I am determined to become buddies with the big brother or big sister. I like to think I’m pretty good with kids. I am not going to ask them to perform. I’m not even going to ask them to smile. Ever. Not once.
What I am going to do is invite them into activities if they want to participate. I’m going to ask them if they think they’re big enough to help with the baby. I’m going to ask to see their room and their toys and find out what they’re into. I’m going to ask Mom and Dad to do things they know are guaranteed to bring out giggles and smiles.
I’m going to take photos of just them and family photos that highlight them as well as the baby.
Because a newborn photo session from me is actually just another family photo session. We’re there to document and celebrate the newest member, but I want you to remember how it ALL was.
And likely we’re going to get the smiles and the cuddles. No forcing, no coercion. Laid-back, fun, and on their terms.
