As a north Alabama school photographer, I have had hundreds and hundreds of kids in front of my camera lens over the course of a school year. And I’ve learned that the whole process is . . . well, a process!

If you’re watching a session from the outside, it might seem like we get off to a slow start.

The child is unsure.

Reserved.

Maybe giving their best fake smile.

And if you’re watching from the outside, you might be so tempted to just ask the child to “say cheese!”

But you’ll never hear me actually ask a child to smile.

Because I’ve got a process!

The first seconds of jitters I’m working to quickly connect with the child.

Trying to find the thing that causes them to have a natural expression.

Sometimes it’s a certain tilt of the head they always do.

Or something with their hands.

A crinkle of the nose.

None of it is forced though.

And it takes a little time.

A little conversation, a little silliness.

So don’t be worried if you’re on the outside and it seems like the beginning is slow.

It’s a process that’s worth waiting for!
